Your Pixel Phone May Get Custom Vibration Patterns for Contacts

If you own a Google Pixel you probably know that you can set up custom ringtones for individual contacts. While the customized ringtone lets you differentiate between contacts that ring you, the feature becomes useless as soon as you keep your phone in vibrate-only mode. It seems Google is aware of this. That’s why it’s working on a feature that allows you to assign custom vibration patterns for individual contacts on Pixel phones.

Pixel phones could soon let you set up custom vibration patterns for each contact

Earlier today, folks over at Android Authority reported spotting code strings in the latest version (4.63.22.800982376) of the Google Contacts app. Per the report, the code strings included phrases like “Vibration_name” for specific contacts. This hints at the ability to connect unique haptics with existing ringtones to the individual contacts on your Pixel phone.

The news outlet further notes spotting references in the Java code. However, it adds that it couldn’t enable the custom vibration feature for individual contacts. If Google goes on to roll out this feature, it would be a great addition for Pixel phone users who prefer keeping their phone silent (in vibrate-only mode).

Here, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Google is testing custom vibrations for Pixel smartphones. Earlier this year, a separate report from the same source indicated that Google was working on an altogether different “Vibrations” tab. The said tab reportedly included a bunch of patterns for ringtones and notifications.

Apple & Samsung already have this feature

Google’s immediate rival, Apple, already has a contact-specific custom vibration feature in place. If you use an iPhone, you can’t just create custom vibrations but also try setting up your own patterns. Samsung also has a feature similar to this. So, if Google ends up rolling out the feature, it will be in line with these brands. For now, there’s no information on when Google is planning to roll out this feature. We can only hope that it goes live soon.
