iPhone 17 series finally launched alongside a bunch of other products like the Watch Series 11, Watch Ultra 3, Watch SE 3, and AirPods Pro 3. New iPhones mean new Apple silicon, and this time they’re the A19 and A19 Pro. The Pro and Pro Max variants bring a brand-new design and colors. Despite all this, the faster mmWave 5G connectivity is available only for iPhone 17 models in the United States. For the rest of the world, Apple limits the connectivity to sub-6GHz 5G.
Faster mmWave 5G is exclusive to iPhone 17 models in the US
Apple introduced 5G support with iPhone 12, and since then, mmWave has been a US-only feature. Apple still isn’t expanding it to other parts of the world. Having said that, mmWave adoption is not quite there yet. It is still growing in regions like China, South Korea, Australia, Japan, and parts of Europe.
The cost of equipping devices with mmWave hardware and the expense of building mmWave networks make a wider rollout impractical, as per Apple. This is in countries where the adoption of the said connectivity is low.
mmWave 5G shows its prowess in crowded environments
The mmWave technology shows its prowess in crowded environments like stadiums, concerts, and airports, among others. On the downside, it offers a short range and can’t quite penetrate obstacles. This makes it less practical in suburban and similar environments. This could be a reason why Apple is taking its sweet time to bring the faster mmWave 5G connectivity to more regions.
The new iPhone Air introduces Apple’s custom C1X modem, which also lacks mmWave 5G connectivity. Apple seems to have its clarity when it comes to mmWave rollout. What this means is that unless infrastructure sees drastic changes, mmWave could be exclusive to the US, where iPhone 17 users can enjoy lightning-fast 5G speeds.
