Bowers & Wilkins Px8 S2: Best Wireless Headphones the Brand Has Ever Made?

If you’ve ever shopped around for wireless headphones with active noise cancellation, chances are you might have come across British audio brand Bowers & Wilkins. While brands like Sony and Bose are more mainstream for ANC headphones, Bowers & Wilkins might have a worthy alternative with its brand-new Px8 S2 headphones.

Bowers & Wilkins debuts new Px8 S2 headphones

Bowers & Wilkins is making some bold claims about its new Px8 S2 headphones. The company is daringly confident enough to claim these are the best headphones it has ever made.

For starters, the company has redesigned the 40mm Carbon Cone drivers with new chassis, voice coil, suspension, and magnet systems. These drivers now sit at precise angles to optimize stereo imaging. This should translate to better soundstage and details. The company also built in a dedicated headphone amplifier to power these drivers properly. This is actually pretty cool and something you don’t typically see in wireless headphones.

The active noise canceling system is getting an overhaul too. Instead of six microphones like the original Px8, the Px8 S2 uses eight mics. Six will handle environmental noise monitoring, while two dedicated mics improve call quality. This uses Bowers & Wilkins’ ADI Pure Voice processing. The company promises this setup delivers its most effective noise canceling yet.

As for connectivity, the Px8 S2 supports both aptX Adaptive 24/96 and aptX Lossless codecs. This means that if you’re streaming from Tidal, Qobuz, or Amazon Music on an Android phone with a decent Snapdragon processor, you’ll actually get true high-resolution wireless audio. Considering that most audiophiles tend to pass on Bluetooth headphones, maybe this could actually get them to reconsider.

Design and Comfort Improvements

That being said, what good are great headphones if you can’t stand to wear them for an extended period of time, right? Visually, the Px8 S2 doesn’t look too different from its predecessor.

The company slimmed down the overall profile compared to the original model, making the Px8 S2 more comfortable for extended listening sessions. The Nappa leather earpads and headband remain. However, the aluminum arm construction now features exposed cable detailing. Also, at 310g, these headphones are actually lighter than you’d expect for such premium construction.

The carry case got smaller too, which matters if you’re traveling frequently. Battery life stays at 30 hours with noise canceling active, and a 15-minute charge nets you seven hours of playback. The Px8 S2 comes in two colorways: Onyx Black and Warm Stone. It is priced at $799, putting it well above its competitors. However, the lighter design and audio improvements might make it a good investment for some.
