For years, one of the most requested features for Google’s Pixel phones has been native call recording. Similar options have been available on other Android devices via custom skins. However, Google has always taken a cautious approach with the Pixel line. But now, it seems the wait is finally over, at least for some. The Google Pixel phones‘ call recording feature is officially appearing.
The new call recording feature on Google Pixel phones
A recent video, captured by a Pixel 8 Pro user in India and shared by Android Authority, offers the first look at Google’s native call recording in action. The footage reveals a clean, straightforward process. During a call, users can access a new “Call Assist” menu to start a recording. Once initiated, both parties are immediately notified that the conversation is being recorded, which is a key step to comply with local laws in many regions.
Once the call is over, the recording isn’t hard to find. You’ll find it in your device’s local storage, appearing directly in the Phone app’s Recents tab. From there, users have a simple playback interface with clear options to share the audio file or delete it entirely. This is a far cry from the days of using complicated third-party apps that were often unreliable.
According to Google’s support pages, the feature is compatible with the Pixel 6 and later models running Android 14 or higher. However, its availability remains limited to regions where it’s legally permitted. The initial sighting in India suggests a gradual rollout rather than a broad, global launch.
This change signals a new approach for Google, which had previously blocked call recording on its devices. With its AI-first approach on devices like the Pixel 9, Google could even link this feature to its AI tools in the future for automatic transcription and summarization. But, for now, the simple ability to record a conversation is a big win for many Pixel owners.
