Walmart’s $23 Onn Camera Makes Google Home Security Ultra-Affordable

Walmart is diving further into the smart home market with the expansion of its in-house tech brand, Onn. The company today launched two new low-cost security gadgets—an Onn indoor camera and an Onn video doorbell—that were developed in close partnership with Google to integrate seamlessly with the Google Home platform.

This partnership marks the first major step in Google’s strategy to expand its Gemini-powered features beyond its own Nest hardware.

Walmart’s new Onn Google Home cameras

The new security lineup aims for affordability without compromising core functionality. The Onn Indoor Camera launches at just $22.96. Meanwhile, the Onn Video Doorbell is priced at $49.86. Both products are available starting today at Walmart.

These prices are notable because they undercut many established budget competitors. At $23, the indoor camera, in particular, sets a new low price for a connected device featuring this level of integration.

The cameras are designed to work exclusively within the Google Home ecosystem. Setup and live streaming happen directly through the Google Home app. Out of the box, users get basic features like three hours of snapshot history, person and motion detection, and sound detection, which includes dog barks and people talking (reported by The Verge).

Features and Gemini integration

The hardware specs offer solid performance for the price point. The wired indoor camera captures 1080p HDR video with a 130-degree field of view, night vision, and two-way audio. The wired video doorbell features a slightly higher 1,600 x 1,200 HDR video resolution and a wide 165-degree field of view (FOV). This maintains the essential 4:3 aspect ratio common in doorbells.

Users seeking advanced video storage and smarter alerts will require a Google Home Premium subscription. This subscription grants access to features like event history and smart alerts for pets and packages. Furthermore, subscribers to the Premium Advanced tier gain access to Google’s newest Gemini for Home camera features. This includes AI-powered text descriptions and advanced camera search capabilities within the Google Home app.

Google has stated that the collaboration with Walmart is deep. This development signals the company’s intent to open its APIs and work with various manufacturers. Lastly, a Google spokesperson also noted that they aim to avoid limiting its Gemini capabilities to a single brand, form factor, or price point.
