T-Mobile’s Satellite Expansion Makes Popular Apps Work Without Signal

T-Mobile had introduced its satellite communication services, dubbed “T-Satellite,” just a few months ago. Now, the carrier is taking its satellite service to the next level as it announces the expansion of the service to cover popular apps. Thanks to its partnership with Starlink, users can now access several popular apps and services, like WhatsApp, maps, and weather services, in places where traditional networks fail.

T-Mobile announces expansion of its Satellite services to popular apps

T-Mobile has formally announced a new update for its T-Satellite services to cover popular apps. The update means customers can now rely on familiar apps such as WhatsApp, AccuWeather, and even X (FKA Twitter) when far away from a signal. Features such as video chats, voice notes, weather tracking, and location sharing will now work through satellite connectivity. T-Mobile says that this change is about safety and convenience.

The main goal behind the push is to provide access even in remote places. And therefore, the performance won’t match high-speed 5G. This update will be particularly helpful to hikers, travelers, or anyone in the rural dead zones, as it gives them the ability to send updates, navigate with maps, and stay in touch with the outside world.

The service expansion is also set to benefit businesses

T-Mobile adds in its official statement that the expansion of its satellite service will benefit businesses. T-Satellite will power apps like Dialpad, FLORIAN, and T-Mobile Direct Connect, ensuring that the field teams and emergency services remain connected during outages or in remote locations. It will also benefit healthcare, logistics, and government, as it can provide lifesaving support when no tower or network is in reach.

Using the apps with the satellite service requires no additional steps or settings. The phone will automatically connect to the service whenever there is a severe drop in the signal. The service is compatible with most satellite-capable devices running on the latest software. For T-Mobile customers, the service is included in premium plans. AT&T and Verizon users can also sign up for the service for $10 per month.
