Samsung One UI 8.5 May Bring Pixel-Like Automatic Call Screening

Samsung is gearing up for a major software refresh with the upcoming One UI 8.5 update. Now, recent findings suggest the company is ready to introduce a critical feature that will look very familiar to Google Pixel users. It seems that Samsung is ready to bring a powerful automatic call screening feature with One UI 8.5. This move signals Samsung’s intention to move beyond its existing manual call-screening tools, such as Bixby Text Call, and directly compete with the sophisticated AI features offered by its rival.

AI automatic call screening is coming to Samsung Galaxy phones with One UI 8.5

Code strings in early One UI 8.5 builds reveal that Samsung is developing an automatic tool designed to detect and answer suspicious calls autonomously (spotted by Android Authority). Operating much like Google’s popular Pixel Call Screen, the system will display a real-time text transcription of the conversation without requiring the user to engage directly. This shift from a manual process to an automated, intelligent one greatly enhances the daily experience for Galaxy owners.

Crucially, Samsung appears focused on giving users extensive control over when the system activates. The code indicates that users will be able to customize the feature across multiple screening levels, allowing them to choose how aggressive the AI should be.

For those seeking basic protection, the Low setting will limit screening only to known spam and scam numbers. Moving up, the Medium level expands screening to include not just spam and scam calls but also international calls and those with blocked caller IDs. The High setting provides an even stricter approach, screening all unknown numbers. Finally, a potential fourth option would screen All Numbers, offering the most comprehensive protection possible.

Similar to Google Pixel devices

These layered protections are similar to the options currently available on Google Pixel phones. However, Samsung may include an option to call screen all numbers. This approach could provide a valuable advantage for those who want to avoid answering a call but still need to ensure they don’t miss anything important. The code also suggests Samsung is working to enable the upgraded call screening to function even when Do Not Disturb is active.

It’s noteworthy that the leaked strings suggesting the four-level screening option were found in Korean. For now, it remains unclear if this comprehensive control will be exclusive for the South Korean market initially. Hopefully the company is also working on a global implementation, or at least support for the English language.
