Raise your hand if you’ve ever fallen asleep in front of the TV before while watching a show or movie halfway through. Most of us have been there, but Google TV might have a way to ensure you’re still watching or have fallen asleep.
Google TV will check if you’re still watching
According to an APK teardown by Android Authority, the publication discovered strings in the recent version of the Google TV Home app for the Google TV platform. Based on what they found, it seems that Google could introduce a way to check if users are still watching Google TV.
This is apparently based on your remote control activity. One of the strings reads, “Just checking in. This channel will stop playing because you haven’t used the remote in a while.” There are additional strings that read, “Are you still watching?” and “Keep watching.” It seems that Google TV will assume if you haven’t touched your remote for a while, you are not watching anymore.
The string also suggests that if it detects no response, it will stop playing. However, it is unclear what the time limit is. For example, what if you’re really engrossed in a movie? A lot of movies these days run for 2 hours or more. Does this mean that your watch experience will get interrupted? Also, as Android Authority notes, the wording says “this channel.”
This has led to speculation that this “sleep checking” feature will apply to all video content. But we’ll have to wait for the feature to roll out to find out more.
This feature is not new, nor is it exclusive to Google TV
This type of “sleep checking” feature isn’t actually new, nor is it exclusive to Google TV. Other platforms, such as Netflix, have something similar. For instance, Netflix displays prompts after the user watches for 90 minutes straight or watches three episodes of a TV series in a row without interacting with the video player.
However, it’s good to see that it’s coming to Google TV. When will it arrive? That’s hard to say, but it definitely looks like Google is working on it.
