iPhone 18 Pro Camera May Boast Powerful Variable Aperture Tech

Apple iPhones are not quite as ahead in terms of photography as the latest Chinese flagships. However, the Cupertino giant seems to be preparing for a major leap in mobile photography. The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could debut Apple’s most advanced camera system with variable aperture support.

iPhone 18 Pro to feature variable aperture in its camera

As reported by ET News, Apple is planning to equip the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with an upgraded main wide-angle lens featuring a variable aperture. Due to this, the camera would be able to automatically adjust the amount of light entering the sensor depending on the scene. For reference, it could open wider in low-light scenarios to allow more light to enter, while in daylight conditions, it could narrow down to avoid overexposure.

The variable aperture isn’t limited to lighting, but it also enhances depth-of-field control. It gives the user flexibility to blur the background or keep the entire scene sharp. The system reportedly replaces the current fixed f/1.8 aperture used in the iPhone 17 Pro devices. The company has already started working with LG Innotech and Foxconn for the camera modules. The actuator production, which enables the aperture’s mechanical movement, will be handled by Sunny Optical and Luxshare ICT.

Apple has found a way to keep the system viable for long-term use

This is not the first time a smartphone manufacturer has used a variable aperture in its cameras. Samsung did it a long time ago, whereas Xiaomi has tried it recently on its flagships as well. Samsung had reportedly dropped it because of the problems associated with the cost and complexity.

The report, however, mentions that Apple’s approach to variable aperture is more refined and compact. It therefore allows the brand to keep the system viable for long-term use while also maintaining a slim design profile.
