Threads is finally leveling up its direct messaging functionality by introducing group DM (direct message) support. Users can now start conversations involving up to 50 people in a single Thread, and chats can have custom names to help distinguish among various groups. In addition, Meta’s Threads is expanding its full messaging features to the EU over the next few days, including support for both individual DMs and group chats.
Threads Group DMs are here for everyone
Until now, Threads only supported one-on-one direct messages, forcing users to juggle private conversations via Instagram. But the new rollout introduces group chats that can host up to 50 people. Users can name their group conversations to better organize them by topic or theme. Meta plans to add invite links, allowing people to join a group chat without needing manual addition.
The group chat feature is part of Meta’s broader effort to enhance the messaging experience across apps. The messaging experience also includes privacy and control tools. Users can filter incoming messages via a requests folder, disable DMs from accounts they don’t follow, and make use of a hidden folder to divert unwanted content away from the main inbox.
Threads’ messaging features go live across the European Union
Furthermore, the Threads app is now pushing its full messaging suite across the European Union. Over the next few days, users in EU countries will gain access to group chats, media features, and privacy settings that were previously unavailable.
Meta hints at continued enhancements for the Threads platform. Some of these include refined inbox management, enhanced privacy, and a sharpened user experience based on user feedback. As group chats go live and messaging expands to more regions, Threads is moving closer to becoming a more complete social space rather than only a microblogging platform.
