Oura Ring to soon measure cumulative stress & blood pressure

Oura is taking a major step forward to improve health tracking on its smart rings. The Oura ring models are planned to get a new cumulative stress monitoring tool and blood pressure estimation feature. With the following update, the company aims to position its ring as more than a sleep tracker and wants it to become a more comprehensive health companion.

Oura Ring to get cumulative stress and blood pressure monitoring

Until now, Oura Ring’s features have mostly revolved around basic health tracking features such as sleep activity, heart rate monitoring, etc. But with the coming update, the Ring is all set to get an advanced cumulative stress monitoring feature. With this new feature, the gadget looks at longer-term data patterns to reveal how ongoing pressure might be affecting the body and mind.

Oura claims that this tool combines physiological metrics like heart rate versatility, body temperature, and sleep trends with validated self-report questionnaires such as the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. The smart rings use these data to create a clearer picture of how stress accumulates over a period of time (in weeks and months).

The new feature will highlight what Oura calls the “hidden impact” of unmanaged stress. It focuses on the kind of stress that doesn’t show up in our moods or emotions daily but has some deep impact in the long term.

Oura says its Blood Pressure monitoring tool is revolutionary

The company is also launching a new study called “The Blood Pressure Profile” to explore how its wearables might detect risks and health implications using the blood pressure metrics. However, smart rings, including the Oura Ring, cannot directly measure blood pressure. And therefore, Oura plans to estimate it using a mix of user data, lifestyle surveys, and family health information.

Participants from Oura Lab will receive an invite soon to join this IRB-approved study. While the whole study might take some good time to conclude, it aims to give users an early warning when their blood pressure may be creeping up, potentially helping them make lifestyle changes before it turns into a health risk. It’s as revolutionary as it sounds.
