Tech giant Meta is bringing new tools with a primary goal to protect its user base from potential scams. The company notes that its teams have “detected and disrupted” nearly eight million accounts associated with scam centers in the United Arab Emirates, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and the Philippines since the beginning of 2025. Meta’s platforms, WhatsApp and Messenger, are usually prone to some serious scams. So these new tools are always welcome.
Meta brings new tools to warn users about WhatsApp and Messenger scams
Meta notes that it has taken action on over 21,000 Facebook pages that moonlight as customer support services of legitimate companies. Despite the efforts, scams find a way, mainly targeting older people or those who aren’t as tech-savvy. On WhatsApp, a warning sign is now shown when users attempt to share their screen with someone not on their contacts list during a video call.
In the warning window, Meta will ask users to only share their screens with people they trust. This is considering they will be displaying what’s on their phones, including sensitive information.
Messenger’s advanced scam detection tools
Besides this, Meta is also testing advanced scam detection tools in the Messenger app. When a user receives a potential scam message, a warning notice will pop up. This will inform them that the message is suspicious and they can send it to Meta for an AI review. If Meta AI detects signs of a scam, it’ll show a list of common scam signs, like job offers in exchange for money, work-from-home offers for jobs that can’t be done remotely, and job offers with a promise of fast cash.
This also reminds users not to wire transfer money or send gift cards, which is usually a common practice of scammers to steal money from their victims. Meta is asking users to ignore job offers with unclear job descriptions. Users will have the option to report and block the account that sent the message.
Meta hasn’t said when the new Messenger scam detection warning tool will roll out widely. However, it’s encouraging users to set up Passkeys to make the accounts safer to sign in. You can also perform a Security Checkup to review security settings and get relevant recommendations.
