Sometimes, bosses and team leaders get shifted over to new places in a company for better or worse, and this is what happened at everyone’s favorite fruit vendor. Apple put Mike Rockwell, the head of the Vision Pro department, in charge of the AI team.
It seems that there’s trouble in paradise, as the world’s most valuable company is struggling in some areas. For starters, the company is still putting on a brave face after the Apple Vision Pro flopped hard last year. Be that as it may, it’s still sending out updates to the platform. However, as bad as things are for its XR division, they seem to be worse for the AI division.
Apple promised us some exciting an innovative AI features to come to iOS. However, users have been met with delay after delay after delay. Right now, iOS 18, which was supposed to be Apple’s grand entrance into the AI space (with fireworks firing in the background and loud rock music playing), but it’s nothing more than a typical iOS version with a few AI features sprinkled in.
So, it’s funny that these two departments are the ones getting the changes in power.
Apple places Mike Rockwell as the head of the AI team
Apple’s core vision for AI was to create AI for the ages, not take ages to create AI. This is happening for the company, unfortunately. The bulk of the grandiose AI features are still being developed in Apple’s labs. Right now, the only AI features that Apple has are features that just about every other AI suite has. There are image generation, image editing, text generation, text summarization, and text refinement features. The only thing that Apple has that other companies don’t is the notification summarization feature, and that one’s plagued with inaccurate results.
As such, it looks like Tim Cook has had it. According to a report from Bloomberg, The Apple CEO has lost confidence in John Giannandrea’s (the current AI leader) ability to lead the AI team. There was a rather tense Siri team meeting where senior Apple director Robby Walker called the situation “ugly”.
As such, Giannandrea will no longer lead the AI team at Apple. Rockwell will take his place, and Apple hopes that this shake-up will help move the company’s AI along. We don’t know where Giannandrea will go next in Apple or if he was let go from the company.
As for the Vision Pro department, Paule Meade will take over as the lead. He was one of the executives who worked under Rockwell.
The post An Apple switch-up puts the XR boss in charge of AI appeared first on Android Headlines.

Source: ndroidheadlines.com

Large corporations are no strangers to shifts in power.
