Its first streaming device running on Vega OS is said to be launching later in 2025. Amazon is also working with publishers to write new apps for the platform.
Amazon is set to ditch the Fire OS for streaming devices that are based on Android and release the first devices running on its new Vega OS sometime in 2025.
Amazon’s Vega OS, a new OS for some of its products, such as the Fire TV streaming stick, has yet to be officially announced. Rumors about this new OS have surfaced before, though. The earliest of those rumors popped up all the way back in November 2023. There wasn’t much said about Vega OS again until 2024. Another report in February of last year stated that Amazon appeared to be hiring engineers for the operating system.
That brings us to today. It’s now being claimed that Amazon is fairly close to releasing its first streaming product that will ditch Android as a base for Fire OS, and move to using Vega OS instead.
Amazon will ditch the Android-based Fire OS on its streaming devices later this year
While there’s still no exact release date, according to Lowpass, who originally reported on this information, Amazon plans to launch its first device that runs on Vega OS sometime later this year. Amazon already offers a few devices that run on this software. So, its streaming products won’t be the first devices to run it. However, the streaming device launching later this year will be the first streaming product with this software.
As of right now, you can see the Vega OS running on a few devices. This includes the Echo Show 5 and Echo Hub. As well as the Echo Spot smart clock.
New apps have to be written for the platform
With Amazon already offering a few products that run on Vega OS, you’d think Amazon would also have some of its streaming products running on it as well. The first streaming device running on Vega OS was supposed to launch in 2024. However, its release has taken longer than expected because Amazon needs new apps written for the platform. Amazon is said to have been “courting major publishers” to get the most important apps up and running.
If that’s the case, then this would explain why the device won’t be released until later this year. In terms of the most important apps, there’s no information on what the apps may be. However, it shouldn’t be hard to guess what Amazon is probably looking at. The biggest streaming apps available include Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, and a few others. Amazon has also likely been hard at work getting its Prime Video and Prime Music apps going for this new operating system.
Again, though, none of this is confirmed, and it’s merely speculation. It’s also worth noting that Amazon plans to release new smart TVs running on the latest version of Fire OS later this year. So there may be some overlap with TVs running on the Android-based platform and Amazon’s new Vega OS platform. It’s also possible that Vega OS smart TVs won’t launch until much later. With Amazon choosing to start small via streaming devices.
The post The Android-free future of Fire TV arrives with Vega OS this year appeared first on Android Headlines.

Source: ndroidheadlines.com

Summary: Amazon is reportedly planning to ditch the Android-based Fire OS soon.
