Sony isn\u2019t quite a household name when it comes to the smartphone market, but it\u2019s rather crucial to it. Many of the smartphones on the market use the company\u2019s camera sensors. Well, it looks like Sony might cut off its camera division and make it its own company.<\/p>\n

While Sony\u2019s phones don\u2019t get praise for their camera performance, the company\u2019s camera sensors have helped rocket many phones to the top of the charts. Google dominated the smartphone camera segment using Sony\u2019s camera technology, and that also goes for other companies like Apple. So, you\u2019d think that the division should be seeing rapid growth year after year, especially since companies are launching more phones per year. However, that might not be the case. <\/p>\n

Sony could make its camera division its own company<\/p>\n

According to the report, Sony\u2019s camera business isn\u2019t doing as well as it did before. While it\u2019s not exactly operating at a loss, its fortunes are going down. It once made up 25% of the company\u2019s profits, but it has since slid down to 10%. So, Sony is making preparations, and it could possibly spin off the business into its own company.<\/p>\n

Sony might give the majority of the company to stakeholders and retain a minority stake in the business. Right now, it\u2019s unclear whether Sony plans to make the business its own separate entity, so, we\u2019ll have to wait for that information. <\/p>\n

We would have had a more solid idea of what\u2019s going on, but there\u2019s a ton of uncertainty in the market. Why? You guessed it; Trump\u2019s tariffs. The volatility of the market has put a lot of things on hold, wo there\u2019s no telling what will happen. <\/p>\n

If Sony does make its camera division its own company, then we might see some sort of change in smartphone camera technology going forward. However, we don\u2019t expect things to change all that much. Sony\u2019s camera sensors are a crucial part of the smartphone market, so we hope that things remain pretty much the same.
