Today, at Google I\/O, both Google and XREAL announced Project Aura. This is XREAL\u2019s next-generation extended reality device, which was designed for the Android XR platform. Which we\u2019ve heard quite a bit about today at Google I\/O in the company\u2019s opening keynote. <\/p>\n
XREAL says that Project Aura is the second official device announced for Android XR, behind Samsung\u2019s Project Moohan, which was announced last year. It also marks a major milestone for the brand new platform, which is the fact that Project Aura is the first optical see-through (OST) XR device. <\/p>\n
This is a lightweight and tethered, cinematic, and Gemini AI-powered device. Project Aura is able to bring a large field-of-view experience to the Android XR family. <\/p>\n
In addition to using the Android XR platform, XREAL is also working with Qualcomm. The company says this collaboration with Qualcomm brings together \u201cleading innovation across hardware, silicon, and software to build the next wave of XR experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cGoogle is thrilled to welcome XREAL to the Android XR family and to build great XR experiences on Project Aura,\u201d said Hugo Swart, Sr. Director, XR ecosystem at Google. \u201cAndroid XR is the first Android platform built in the Gemini era, and it will support a rich ecosystem of immersive devices, both Virtual see-through (VST) and Optical see-through (OST). By combining our platform with XREAL\u2019s leadership in portable XR hardware, we\u2019re expanding spatial experiences to OST form factors that are truly intuitive and accessible, representing a pivotal moment in our ecosystem.<\/p>\n
XREAL will announce more about Project Aura next month<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s announcement at Google I\/O does not provide all of the details about Project Aura that you\u2019re likely expecting. However, XREAL has said that it will talk more about Project Aura at Augmented World Expo (AWE) next month, and also provide even more details later this year. <\/p>\n
That indicates to us that Project Aura is still quite a way away from launching. So far, we don\u2019t have any Android XR devices we can officially buy, but we expect that to change before the end of the year. <\/p>\n
XREAL\u2019s co-founder and CEO, Chi Xu said, \u201cPartnering with Google on Android XR takes this vision to the next level. Project Aura reflects the power of this collaboration, merging a robust platform with advanced chipsets and our expertise in optical systems.
