Right now, there is a legal battle going on that could have an immense effect on the smartphone industry. Qualcomm, the massive chipmaker behind the Snapdragon processors, is tangled up in a lawsuit against Collabo Innovations Inc. Well, the judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit against Qualcomm. As such, the lawsuit will proceed.<\/p>\n

What was the lawsuit about?<\/p>\n

Collabo Innovations Inc. is a tech company that purchased the patent for a specific kind of microcontroller chip. This chip handles a system\u2019s shutdown process, and the patent originally came from Panasonic.<\/p>\n

However, according to the lawsuit, Qualcomm infringed on that patent and used the same type of microcontroller for its chips. So, Collabo Innovations Inc. is suing Qualcomm, but it\u2019s suing the company for more than just money. Qualcomm will likely have to pay money and damages. The company may also need to stop using the patented microcontroller in its chips.\u00a0If that happens, then all of the devices that will use future Qualcomm chips could see some effect.<\/p>\n

The judge will not dismiss the lawsuit against Qualcomm<\/p>\n

However, its request came crashing down. According to the report, the judge said that there\u2019s some debate over the term \u201cmicrocontroller.\u201d The lawsuit will continue as planned, and the company will need to go through the full legal process. There\u2019s still hope for Qualcomm, as the fact that the judge did not dismiss the lawsuit doesn\u2019t guarantee that Qualcomm will lose it.<\/p>\n

Right now, we can\u2019t say which chips will change if Qualcomm loses the lawsuit. The company usually announces its latest Snapdragon chips in the fall, but it starts testing its chips earlier in the year with its partners.
