The PS5 apparently has an issue with the liquid metal that Sony used to keep the APU cool, and it could end up killing the console for some users. Whether you own a PS5 or not, you might not be aware that it uses liquid metal placed on the APU as its cooling method to manage temperatures. Sony is using the liquid metal in place of thermal paste to help transfer heat from the APU to the heatsink. It\u2019s done a pretty good job of it, but it also appears to be causing a big problem for a subset of the customer base.<\/p>\n
According to Moore\u2019s Law is dead (spotted by Wccftech), the liquid metal on some PS5 units is dripping down from the APU to the bottom of the console. But only if the console is placed vertically. This results in the APU having dry spots. This is said to be causing overheating in certain games. The PS5 then shuts down if the APU gets too warm and is stressed to its limits. This problem isn\u2019t exactly new, but it was limited to a much smaller number of users when it was first noticed. Now, it seems more and more users are experiencing this issue.<\/p>\n
The liquid metal issue is impacting older PS5 models the most<\/p>\n
Both the PS5 Slim and the PS5 Pro can be impacted by this issue. So, don\u2019t dismiss it if you have one of these models. It seems the older PS5 models are most at risk, however. This is especially true for the original models that launched back in 2020. It\u2019s also worth noting that your console won\u2019t necessarily experience this issue. Even if you do have it placed vertically. However, you might want to change the PS5\u2019s orientation to horizontal if you\u2019re concerned about it.<\/p>\n
That being said, it\u2019s possible that your console may have started leaking liquid metal already. If this is the case, turning your PS5 horizontal may not fix the issue. It could just be delaying an inevitable console failure. As of right now, Sony doesn\u2019t seem to have a resolution in place. It does seem like Sony is aware of the issue, though.
