Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Design

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 looks very similar to its predecessor. There are two very major differences, though, design-wise. The Fold 7 is much thinner and much lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. It is 8.9mm thick when folded, and 4.2mm thick when unfolded, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 12.1mm when folded, and 5.6mm when unfolded. That is a huge difference when handling the phone, and it actually brings the Galaxy Z Fold 7 a lot closer to the competition from China.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 weighs 215 grams, compared to 239 grams of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Yes, that is also a notable difference that you will notice when using the phone. Hand fatigue should be less of a problem, if it was thus far. The new foldable is also a bit larger than the old one. It’s taller and wider, while it also has larger displays than the Fold 6, both of them, actually.

Other than those differences, they’re quite similar. They are both rather squarish. Their frame is flat, while the front and back sides are also flat. Both of them have a centered display camera hole on the cover display. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has an in-display camera on the main panel, while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a camera hole on the main display. It’s not centered, though, due to the hinge it’s moved to the right side a bit.

Three vertically aligned cameras sit on the back of both phones, in the top-left corner. Both setups are placed on top of a camera module there, which already protrudes from the backplate. Both of these phones are made mostly out of glass and aluminum. They are also IP48 certified for water and dust resistance.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has an 8-inch Foldable Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X display. That display offers an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and it supports HDR10+ content. It gets plenty bright, and we’re looking at a 2184 x 1968 resolution here. The cover display is also a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X panel, but it doesn’t fold. It also has an adaptive refresh rate, and it’s protected by the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2. It measures 6.5 inches, while we’re looking at a resolution of 2520 x 1080 here. This one also gets more than bright enough.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6

The Galaxy Z Fold 6, on the other hand, has a 7.6-inch Foldable Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X main display. It offers an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It supports HDR10+ content, and it goes up to 2,600 nits of peak brightness. The resolution here is 2160 x 1856. The cover display on the phone measures 6.3 inches, and it’s a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X panel too. It has an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. The resolution here is 2376 x 968 pixels, and the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects this panel.

All four of these displays are very good, actually. They’re vivid, have good viewing angles, and are more than sharp enough. They also do get bright enough when you need them to. There’s not much to complain about here, other than the fact that they don’t offer high-frequency PWM dimming. If you don’t care about that, though, both phones have very good panels.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, a 3nm chip. That is the same chip that the company uses in the flagship Galaxy S25 series of smartphones. In this phone, it’s paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage. The Galaxy Z Fold 6, on the other hand, is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip. That’s a 4nm processor, and it’s paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage.

We still didn’t get a chance to properly test the Galaxy Z Fold 7. However, judging by the Galaxy S25 series, which has similar performance-related internals, the performance won’t be a problem. We’re expecting outstanding performance from the phone. Even last year’s model, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, still offers great performance in basically every way, and that is expected to continue. So… we’re not worried.

No, not even games should be a problem for this handset. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is plenty powerful to run anything you throw at it, and the same goes for the Galaxy Z Fold 6, actually. The performance difference between the two phones is not expected to be all that significant, at least not visibly. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is notably more powerful, of course, that chip that it uses trumps its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 comes with a 4,400mAh battery pack. That is the same battery capacity the Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers, despite the fact that the Fold 7 has larger displays and a more powerful chip. That is one area in which Samsung cannot compete with the competition from China. Despite the fact that the company thinned down the phone and cut the weight, it did not increase the battery capacity. Samsung still refuses to use silicon-carbon batteries, which is one of the main reasons why this battery capacity does not go well beyond 5,000mAh, or even over 5,500mAh.

Still, that 4,400mAh battery pack served the Galaxy Z Fold 6 rather well. It was not the best smartphone in terms of battery life, not even close, but it offered passable battery life, especially considering the capacity. So we’ll reserve our judgment until the full review, but looking at the battery capacity, things do not look promising, especially long term. Samsung really need to do an amazing job with optimizations.

The company also didn’t make any improvements in terms of charging. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 still charges at 25W via a wire, just like the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Both of them also support 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wired charging. You can expect both phones to charge in about an hour and a half, a bit less than that, actually. Neither phone ships with a charger in the box, though.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Cameras

What about the cameras? Well, while the telephoto camera stayed the same on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung did improve the main and telephoto snappers. The company opted to use a 200-megapixel main camera (1/1.3-inch sensor size) here, instead of a 50-megapixel snapper (1/1.57-inch sensor size), which the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 uses. That should make a difference, that’s for sure. We’ve seen that sensor in action on other high-end offerings from Samsung already.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7

The two phones have the same ultrawide camera. We’re looking at a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (1/3.2-inch sensor size, 123-degree FoV) on both. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (1/3.52-inch sensor size, 3x optical zoom), while the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a 10-megapixel telephoto camera too, but with a 1/3.94-inch sensor size. It also supports 3x optical zoom.

We did not get a chance to test out the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s cameras, but the Galaxy Z Fold 6 did not do a great job in that department. Quite a few competitors managed to trump it. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 should be able to do a much better job with the main camera. We’re also expecting some improvements in the telephoto department, but that camera sensor is still not that larger compared to the competition, not to mention that this is not a periscope telephoto camera, but a regular telephoto unit. So, we’re not expecting a lot.

Audio

Both of these smartphones ship with stereo speakers. The loudness that both sets of speakers offer is good, but not class-leading.
