Google Drive on the Web received a feature last month that can automatically generate a summary of PDF files. The search titan is now planning to add the same functionality to the Google Drive app on Android devices. <\/p>\n
Recently, folks over at Android Authority explored the Google Drive v2.25.250 Android app and found code hinting at an automatic PDF summarization feature through the Gemini AI assistant. Now, in an APK teardown of the latest version of the app, the same source found clues that suggest that development is more advanced. It seems that Google is getting ready to launch this useful functionality soon, which will save a lot of time while viewing PDF files.<\/p>\n

According to the report, Google Drive v2.25.280 for Android has strings of code for a feature that can automatically generate a summary of uploaded PDF files. While this feature isn\u2019t live yet, the publication has managed to activate it to offer an early look. As you can see in the image below, once you open a PDF file in Google Drive, you\u2019ll see its \u201cSummary by Gemini\u201d on top of the page.<\/p>\n
In the earlier Google Drive v2.25.250, the source discovered that users had to manually activate this feature by clicking the \u201cSummarize this file\u201d button while viewing a PDF. However, the upcoming stable versions of the Google Drive app for Android devices will likely automatically show the summary on top of the PDF files.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s also going to be possible to ask Gemini questions<\/p>\n
It\u2019s worth mentioning that Google Drive\u2019s Android app will also have an \u201cAsk Gemini\u201d button below the summary of the PDF files. Using the button, users will be able to open the usual Gemini bottom sheet, where they can ask more queries about the PDF. Furthermore, users can give \u201cthumbs up\u201d or \u201cthumbs down\u201d to send feedback on Gemini\u2019s performance while summarizing a PDF.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Google Drive could also offer multi-file and limited folder summarization functionalities. These features could allow the app to summarize content across various documents and PDF files at the same time.
