Google’s Next Android Feature Is for You

Have you ever looked at your phone‘s screen and thought, “That’s a lot of blur?” If you use an Android device, you’re not alone. As Google rolls out its new Material 3 Expressive design language, a lot of the interface is getting a soft, frosted-glass look. You’ll see it everywhere: the Quick Settings panel, the notification shade, and the app drawer are all getting a healthy dose of background blur. That said, Google will add an option to turn off the blur effect on Android.

In a recent interview, Mindy Brooks, the VP of Product Management for Android, confirmed to the Android Faithful podcast that the company is adding a new customization setting that will let you turn all that blur off with a simple tap. This is a huge win for those who prefer a cleaner, sharper look. While it can look sleek and modern, the “full blur” UI is not for everyone.

Android to get an option to turn off the global “blur” effect

The decision to add this toggle isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s also a move in favor of accessibility. For some users, a blurry background can make text and icons harder to read. The new setting will make sure the screen remains crisp and easy to navigate for everyone. It also aligns with Google’s long-standing philosophy of making Android as customizable as possible.

While we don’t have a firm release date yet, the feature is expected to arrive in the “near future.” The good news is that the core technology is already in place; a similar option has existed for a while in the Developer Options menu. However, it’s not something the average person would find. The work now is about creating a polished, user-friendly toggle that is easy to find and use.

Disabling blur will bring a battery life boost

As a minor bonus, turning off the blur could even give you a little extra battery life. The blur effect requires some processing power from your phone’s GPU. While it’s probably not a huge drain, every little bit helps. In fact, Android’s own battery saver mode already disables this effect, which shows that it does have a small impact on power consumption.

So, if you’re looking forward to a new, modern look for your Android phone but aren’t a fan of all the blur, you won’t have to wait long for a solution. Let’s hope to get more news about the arrival of this new customization option soon.
The post Tired of Blur?
