The system-wide dark mode on Android has existed since 2019 with the Android 10 release. While the majority of apps have adopted this, some are not fully there yet. These apps display light themes despite the system-level dark mode being turned on. Google is finally taking steps to address this with the recently released Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1, which introduces forced dark mode in all your apps.<\/p>\n

The Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 lets you force dark mode in apps where it hasn\u2019t been manually implemented. However, this change could probably make a mess, especially for the apps that have a lot of text. But it should encourage developers who haven\u2019t jumped on the dark mode bandwagon to finally bring a proper dark mode. This \u201cExpanded\u201d dark theme toggle will automatically invert the light app interface when the dark mode is on.<\/p>\n

Google, on the Android Developers Blog, says that starting in Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1, there will be a new option within Android\u2019s dark theme settings. Google demos the new expanded dark theme feature with the Fitbit app, which doesn\u2019t have a built-in dark theme. The app\u2019s interface swaps to dark theme with light text when the force dark theme is on. Android Police reports that this feature forces dark mode in other apps like Airbnb, FedEx, and DoorDash.<\/p>\n

Google notes the new dark theme is \u201clargely an accessibility feature,\u201d meaning it\u2019s there to help users with photosensitivity or those who have trouble reading dark text on light backgrounds.
