WhatsApp has rolled out a new update to beta users and it actually includes dark mode.
\nA feature that many users have been waiting for months to get on their Android smartphone. It’s been available on iOS for quite a while.
\nFor now, the dark mode is only available in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android. But that should change in the next few weeks. After WhatsApp figures out if there are any issues with it, then it’ll be pushed to the stable version.
\nIt’s not a true „black” dark mode
\nIt isn’t a truly black dark mode either, on WhatsApp, unfortunately. Instead, you’re getting a darker color of blue. Sort of like the Twitter dark mode, before the AMOLED dark mode rolled out a couple months ago.
\nIt is definitely a nice improvement for WhatsApp, from the nearly all white interface. But it isn’t quite on the level of saving you a ton of battery life, unfortunately.
\nWhatsApp does have this working with the system-wide dark mode that is available in Android 10. So if you are running on Android 10, and use WhatsApp, you’ll see options for „Set by Battery Saver”, „System Default” as well as light and dark. But if you are running something older, the „System Default” option won’t be there.
\nThis is a good move by WhatsApp, and it’ll be great to see it land on the stable version in the coming weeks.
\nIf you are in the beta for WhatsApp, you are able to enable it now by going to Settings. Then tapping on Chat, and then Theme. You’ll see the option to enable dark mode there.
\nWhatsApp dark mode won’t save your battery as much as you wish it would
\nBecause WhatsApp is going with a lighter dark mode, instead of going true black, it won’t really improve your battery life as much as it should.
\nThis is because most smartphones are using OLED displays now. And when you use black colors, it actually doesn’t light up those pixels. Saving you a pretty significant amount of battery life. But, since WhatsApp is using a darker blue\/gray color for its dark mode, it won’t be on the same level as black. It will save you some battery life from that bright white interface, but not nearly as much as a truly black dark mode would have done.
\nHopefully WhatsApp plans to add a black dark mode in the future, much like Twitter did, after plenty of feedback from its users.
