\nThat being said both consoles had their prices listed well into the year. The Xbox Series X had its price revealed on September 9, while Sony didn’t reveal the PS5 price until September 16. About one week later than Microsoft.
\nThe late-year price reveals led consumers to think that both companies were waiting until the other went first. It seemed like a plausible situation. Given the kind of advantage it might be able to afford the person who revealed prices second.
\nPlayStation boss Jim Ryan says that isn’t the case though.
\nSony settled on the price of the PS5 well before the Xbox Series X price was announced
\nYou might think Sony’s approach to announcing cost so late in the year was influenced by Microsoft. But in an interview with Edge, Ryan says people have it wrong.
\nSony had apparently settled on the cost of the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition much earlier in the year. Well before Microsoft had revealed what the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S would cost.
\nRyan refers to the cost of the two PS5 versions as the company’s preferred pricing. Further stating that the preferred pricing was decided pre-lockdown. Which means it would have been decided in the beginning of March or earlier. Some 6 months before the official reveals from Microsoft and Sony.
\nSony’s preferred price hadn’t changed since the decision was made
\nSure, Sony could have still decided on the cost of the PS5 early in the year and changed it after learning what Microsoft was doing.
\nBut that too is apparently not the case. Sony’s preferred pricing for its next-gen console hasn’t changed. Once the company settled on its retail cost, that was that. It’s been the same ever since according to Ryan.
\nThat means that Sony has had a clear vision for the PS5 in regards to its cost and likely how to ensure it ends up being massively profitable just like the PS4.
\nEven though it seemed like both Sony and Microsoft were waiting for the other to pull the trigger, it seems that couldn’t be further from the truth. Both companies appear to have had plans for pricing set in stone for quite some time.
\nDespite Sony having known very early on what it would sell the PS5 for, that hasn’t made getting one any easier. For weeks post-launch, the PS5 has been out of stock just about everywhere. With some retailers getting little bits of stock replenished only to have it sell out moments later.
