Update: The Android 10 OTA is now rolling out to Pixel devices.
After announcing Android 10 was stable, and would start rolling out to Pixel devices today. Factory and OTA images have appeared on the Google Developer site.
This means that those that are impatient and want to get a dose of Android 10 right away can do so. By flashing the factory image onto their device right now. Or flashing the OTA.
This is a much faster way of getting Android 10 onto your Google Pixel, instead of having to wait for Google to actually push it to your device. Which could take a few hours or even a few days. Seeing as these updates are normally done in a staged roll out – to make sure it doesn’t run into any major snags.
What are factory images?
Factory images is basically the entire „image” of the operating system. Flashing this would take your phone back to the way it would be if you took it out of the box, brand new today.
It’s a much larger image, typically several gigabytes in size. Seeing as it is the entire operating system and not just an update to the operating system. So it also includes the bootloader, the kernel and much more.
Flashing the factory image does take a bit of time, and that is why. Because there is so much data that needs to be flashed over to the device. Luckily, we do have a tutorial on how you can flash the factory image onto your smartphone today.
Normally, flashing the OTA image would be a much better idea, as it is faster.
What’s the different between factory and OTA images?
The main difference between an OTA and factory image is pretty simple. The Android 10 factory images includes the entire operating system. The OTA only contains files that were changed. It’s basically the version of Android 10 that Google would send to your phone.
This is normally the way that the majority of us would rather upgrade to the next version of Android. Because it is a much smaller image, and only takes a couple of minutes to flash onto the device.
But the biggest reason, is because it does not require wiping your phone. Flashing a factory image means that you’re going to lose all of the data on your phone and need to set it up again from scratch.
With an OTA, it does not touch your personal data. Which is a really cool thing.
