In the past few weeks, a number of people have noticed a big uptick in Google Calendar spam. With some people being bombarded with so much spam, that they can’t even see their actual, legitimate appointments for the day.
It’s gotten pretty bad for Google Calendar users. The company is aware of the issue, and is working on a fix. But when that fix might be coming, is another story.
Calendar spam is a new type of spam that we want killed with fire
Many of us rely on Google Calendar to keep track of different appointments. Whether that’s meetings, birthdays, work schedules, or even just doctor’s appointments. It’s a pretty important part of our workflow.
Having all this spam infiltrate our Calendar is a big deal. Which is probably why it was trending on Twitter last week, and is one of the most searched for terms on Google in the past few weeks. That shows just how big of a deal this actually is for Google and its users.
We’ve been dealing with email spam for many years. Gmail and other email providers have gotten pretty good at identifying and keeping those spam emails out of our inbox, so we never have to see them. But now it’s moving to another platform, and Google needs to do something about it pretty quickly.
How can I stop these spam invites in the meantime?
Google is „working diligently” to fix this issue. But there’s no word on how long that might take Google. It could be fixed this week, or next month, or even next year. No one really knows right now.
Luckily, there is a workaround. Which, while annoying, does at least free your calendar from these spam invites.
You’ll first need to go to the desktop version of Google Calendar.
From there, click on the event that you want to report as spam.
Then click on the three dots icon – which is the „More Actions” icon.
Now, click on „Mark as Spam”.
Once you do that, all occurrences of that event will disappear from your calendar. Essentially freeing you of all of that spam. It really doesn’t take a lot of time, but unfortunately it is not available in the app on your Android smartphone.
This is likely only the beginning of mass Google Calendar spam, and it’s probably going to be something we have to get used to, unfortunately. But at least we do have a way to combat it, at least for now.
