Sony Assures Xperia 5 & Xperia 1 Will Support DUALSHOCK 4

Sony has assured users that the Xperia 5 and Xperia 1 would support DUALSHOCK 4 controllers. The company announced the news at its IFA 2019 press conference.
Sony notes that the Xperia 5 will have support right out of the box. Meanwhile the Xperia 1 will get support for the controller in a software update.
Many of Sony’s phones already have this support, so it’s not new
Sony has been offering wireless connection support to the DUALSHOCK 4 on many of its phones for a while now. And not just for PS4 Remote Play.
DUALSHOCK 4 support has been available for Sony’s devices as far back as the Xperia Z2, which launched about four months after the PS4. Just about every phone thereafter in the Xperia line has been added to that list, too.
Oddly enough the Xperia 1 has seemingly not allowed wireless DUALSHOCK 4 connections. But that seems to be changing now, according to Sony’s Senior Executive VP Shigeki Ishizuka.
Fortnite on Android will be a supported game
Fortnite is still one of the most popular games around, sitting at rank number 3 for most-watched games on Twitch.
Sony took this opportunity to plug that the DUALSHOCK 4 would work with Fortnite when connected to the Xperia 5 and Xperia 1. It’s also likely that it will work with any Sony Xperia phone that can connect to the controller and support Fortnite.
In addition to Fortnite support for the controller, it’s also working with Epic Games to have Fortnite support the 21:9 aspect ratio. Other game studios are being worked with for the same thing, but Sony doesn’t mention which ones.
Support for the Xperia 1 may be closer than we think
Sony doesn’t confirm when the software update for the Xperia 1 will be arriving. It may be closer than expected though. The Xperia 1 is already listed as compatible on the Sony support page for connecting to Remote Play.
This could suggest that wireless DUALSHOCK 4 support is just around the corner. When it does arrive, Remote Play will have a bigger role in playing games on the phone with the controller. Some mobile games besides Fortnite will support the controller though.
In fact some already do. Technically, any game that supports HID gamepads should allow the PS4 controller to work. Some games though, like Fortnite, may have optimized support.
Sony officially announced the Xperia 5 earlier today, featuring a 6.1-inch screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 855, and has 6GB of RAM as well as 128GB of internal memory.
