Google has now taken the wraps off of the features and improvements that it plans to deliver with the Go Edition version of Android 10. A number of enhancements are being made, building on the success of Android’s sister platform. Those range from changes in how Android 10 handles apps and memory to the launch of new apps and services for users.
Improvements will undoubtedly be made for existing apps too but the biggest advantage of the Android 10 Go Edition update is its improvements to speed and security.
On the latter front, Google is introducing Adiantum. That’s an entry-level data encryption feature. In effect, it delivers the same kind of encryption and protection seen in the full-size variant of Android. But that’s been designed to run as efficiently as possible.
Adiantum isn’t going to affect performance either. Because of a variety of optimizations made in the new firmware, it’s actually going to be much faster. Google says that all comes back to memory-management. In the new Go Edition Android, apps will launch as much as 10-percent faster than in previous updates. Switching between apps will be faster too and all while keeping app launching and system stability intact.
Android 10 builds up Go with new security and featured apps
According to Google, more than 500 OEMs have released more than 1,600 Android Go Edition devices in the past 18 months alone. In fact, they make up more than 80-percent of entry-level Android phone activations. So the decision to revamp the experience alongside the launch of Android 10 makes a lot of sense. Some of the apps are already in place but Google notes that those will continue to see improvements with the new firmware.
The first of the new updates come via Google Go, a Google app made for budget-friendly low-spec devices. The app features an AI-driven feature for reading text aloud as well as a slimmed-down version of Google Lens. The latter of those tools works as it does on pricier devices, providing access to real-world text-translation, image recognition, and more.
YouTube Go, on the other hand, lets users watch videos over low-speed connections and works by reducing the amount of data consumed. That’s a two-fold benefit to users since it prevents phone bills from getting too high due to data usage. It does that while still providing access to one of the largest collections of video-based media on the web.
Finally, Gallery Go by Google Photos brings the benefits of Google Photos to budget-friendly gadgets. Tipping the scales at just 10MB, that helps automatically back up and sort photos snapped by users. The app is accessible online or off and is driven by on-device AI.
This update is still OEM-dependent
The newly announced Android 10 Go Edition updates highlight one of the sole drawbacks to that version of Android. Namely, Android Go is still dependent on manufacturers when it comes to any rollouts.
That means that no current devices are guaranteed to ever see Android 10 Go Edition arrive. Whether or not it does will be something individual OEMs need to work out. Although Android Go devices can cost as little as under $40 — Google notes the lowest cost is just $27 — users will have to wait and see.
Conversely, they could update to a new Android Go device that ships with Android 10. Google expects those to begin arriving sometime later this fall.
Regardless of that, Android 10 Go Edition is going to deliver a much better experience for end-users who do receive it.
