How To Potentially Improve Stadia Over Wi-Fi Connections

Stadia works over Ethernet and over Wi-Fi connections, and this guide aims to help you potentially improve the usability over Wi-Fi.
To be clear, this will not be meant to improve the graphical fidelity of games. What it aims to do is potentially improve the frame rate and the smoothness of gameplay.
Essentially the key is turning off your location services when playing on Wi-Fi. This matters because location services tend to use Wi-Fi to either triangulate your location or assist in the location finding in pairing with your device’s GPS.
When this pings to your device it has to disrupt your Wi-Fi for a brief moment. If this happens while you’re playing games on Stadia it may be more noticeable to you.
For clarification, this is in no way a guarantee that the smoothness of your gameplay will improve. It could potentially help though. And it certainly won’t make your Stadia gameplay worse, so it may be worth a shot.
Improve your Stadia gameplay over Wi-Fi by disabling location
To potentially improve your gameplay, try turning off your location services. Where and how you do this will vary depending on your device.
On Android
If you’re playing on an Android phone that’s supported, like the Pixel 4 XL, then start by heading into your settings menu.
From there, scroll down until you see the Location settings menu. Tap on that and proceed to disable any location options that are turned on.

After you disable the main toggle, scroll a little further down the same page and tap on the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning menu. Enter this menu and disable the toggles for Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning.
Lastly, extend the Emergency Location Service menu and disable both the first two options. Which are Emergency Location Service and Google Location Accuracy. If you feel more comfortable doing so, leave Emergency Location Service on.
This should help improve the smoothness of your Stadia gameplay over Wi-Fi. If you were noticing intermittent stuttering in the first place. Keep in mind you may also not notice much of a difference.
On Windows 10
If you’re playing over Wi-Fi using a Windows 10 laptop or desktop, then location options are obviously in a different spot.
On Windows, click on the settings menu. From there, click on Privacy. Location options that can be disabled are sitting in the Privacy menu so you’ll need to go here to turn them on or off.

Once in this menu, you’ll start on the general settings options. Scroll down the side to find Location under the App Permissions tag. Click on it.
There is only one toggle to deal with here that takes care of the whole thing. Simply click on the „change” button for allowing locations services on your device. You will see immediately whether it’s on or off before you do. If it’s on, click on „change” and toggle it off.
That’s it for Windows 10 devices.
Make sure you’re connected to 5GHz for the best experience
This is likely already well-known by most, but 5GHz connections can offer the best experience. This is what Google recommends.
If you’re not already connected to 5GHz networks when you play Stadia games over Wi-Fi, then make sure to change this up. If you have a router that supports it. And most routers do these days.
The one issue to pay attention to is that 5GHz connections are not the strongest in terms of covering distance or penetrating walls and obstructions. If your router is on the other side of the house from where you’re playing, you may still notice stuttering or disconnections.
This happens to me somewhat regularly if I’m playing games on Stadia over Wi-Fi with the Chromecast Ultra or through the web browser. Not the Pixel 3a XL though.
And that’s that. Hopefully this helps your gameplay experience improve.
