The Korea Herald believes that LG is going to launch the V60 ThinQ during Mobile World Congress. It will take place in Barcelona in February 2020. This makes sense as the V50 ThinQ was launched at MWC 2019.
The report cites industry sources, who believe that the V60 ThinQ will be similar to its predecessor. This means that we will likely again be looking at a phone with 5G connectivity and a screen accessory.
Insiders believe that LG aims to expand its presence in the regions where 5G coverage is available with its upcoming dual-screen phone. Consequently, this will allow it to boost shipments in key markets like South Korea, Japan, and the United States.
Although the specifications of the phone aren’t known yet, the report talks about one probable improvement. Basically, its predecessor came with an OLED panel touting folio case.
It has three pogo pins, two for connecting the display to the phone and one for transferring touch data. The report recalls that the case features free stop hinge technology that allows users to hold the display at ay position they want. The upcoming 5G phone will likely be compatible with a similar case but with an upgraded folding structure.
A Detachable Screen Isn’t As Risky As A Foldable Display
Although LG has patented foldable phones, it seems it is still not ready to commercialize one yet. If the current year is any indications, manufacturers haven’t really perfected the bendable technology. And while an industry leader like Samsung can afford to take some risks and experiment, LG isn’t really in the same position.
LG’s smartphone unit hasn’t been able to turn up a profit in years. Sales weren’t that impressive this year either. Thus, for now, it makes sense for the company to avoid ideas that will potentially contribute to losses further.
And it’s not just about the finances, as failed products also bring negative PR.
A handset with an attachable display will give users the best of both worlds. They will be able to increase screen estate without worrying about breaking the display. Of course, some users might find it cumbersome to use an accessory. However, LG seems to think that this is a good idea for now.
As far as the technical details of the V60 ThinQ are concerned, not much has been spotted. However, it’s almost guaranteed that it will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC under the hood.
The base version will likely have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory. We can also expect the phone to have a large battery. After all, two displays require a lot of juice.
Like its predecessor, the phone will supposedly have a large display, possibly bigger than 6.4-inches. At the back, we expect to see wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and telephoto units. A depth sensor will also be appreciated by fans.
Beyond that, not a lot can be said at this point. Hopefully, LG will step things up in the software department and maybe dial down the price a bit. This will help the phone compete better with other devices.
