DoNotPay is an established service that can share Netflix passwords with you, so you can get the service for free. Among other things. Now it has a new service that is going to help you get bill extensions during this pandemic when you’re likely out of work and not able to pay.
While members of Congress are lobbying to get mortgage, rent and utility payments suspended during this pandemic, there’s no guarantee that it’ll actually happen. So DoNotPay is here to help.
It’s a chatbot that will use both local and state laws to get bill extensions
Basically, DoNotPay has a chatbot that will identify any bills that are eligible for an extension or a late fee waiver. It will then reach out to the company to make a „compassionate and polite request.”
Now, if the request is denied at first, the service will then send out a second letter, listing relevant local and state laws.
So far, DoNotPay is only available in the US, but it is looking to bring it to more countries like the UK.
It’s important to note that not all 50 US states have Coronavirus-related laws or orders in effect right now. Though there are some states do have measures in place forbidding landlords from using unreasonable late fees on its tenants. Or evicting tenants at this time. DoNotPay says that it’s going to use the „full force of the local and state laws” for states with no related Coronavirus laws or orders in effect at the time.
Rent and utlities are a bit more straight forward to get bill extensions for. But with credit cards, it can be a bit trickier. And that these require negotiations. So it could take a bit longer for that to happen.
Though given everything that is going on right now, most credit card companies will likely allow you to move your due date if needed. And many people will need to do so, considering most states are down to only essential businesses being open. Of course, there are plenty of people working from home and still getting paid. So not everyone is out of work, but the unemployment rate is said to be around 20-25% right now. Which is pretty incredible – and not in a good way.
