Sony hasn’t launched its second flagship for 2020 yet, tentatively expected to be the Xperia 5 II, but it may be the smallest 5G handset to date irrespective of its branding. That’s based on reports out of Japan, citing a Weibo post. The post itself purportedly gets its information from an insider source. According to that source, the second 2020 flagship will bear the Xperia branding but will come in smaller than the Xperia 1.
Now, the size mentioned in the post is also smaller than last year’s Sony Xperia 5 too. That handset landed with a 6.1-inch OLED Triluminos display powered by the X-Reality engine. The new device touts a display, the source claims, measuring between 5.6- and 5.8-inches.
That would make the upcoming flagship the smallest such smartphone launched yet. That’s if Sony follows its prior trend set by the Xperia 1 and launches the gadget with 5G support. It would be the first handset to launch with next-gen networking at below 6-inches, in fact.
What might this phone bring with it to the table?
Sony’s first-gen Xperia 5 was pushed to market following its announcement back in September of last year. That Android-powered smartphone was an award-winning piece of hardware. So there’s plenty to get excited about if this new device is its successor.
That’s setting aside the fact that Sony continues to bring its various hardware divisions together for smartphone-related projects. With that policy change in place, Sony should be able to compete with other OEMs on just about any aspect of a smartphone. That’s from displays to cameras, audio, and performance.

It also delivered on cameras with three 12-megapixel snappers on the back and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. The main camera is a 26mm lens with a 1.4um pixel size that features an f/1.6 aperture lens. Both both OIS and EIS are part of that package. The other two have an f/2.4 aperture lens and one of those packs both OIS and EIS as well. The selfie snapper is an HDR-enhanced, 1.12um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture lens.
Despite its diminutive size, the first-generation Sony Xperia 5 also featured Bluetooth 5.0, an NFC chip, USB Type-C 3.1, and Dolby Atmos in its IP65/68-certified, 21:9 ratio frame.
Across the board, an Xperia 5 II from Sony should ultimately iterate on all of those features and more. The screen, in particular, should be able to pack in more pixels per inch with a smaller panel to work with. Meanwhile, 5G support would ensure the fastest downloads possible.
But will this be the Sony Xperia 5 II at all?
As noted above, there seems to be no confirmation that the new handset will be billed as the Sony Xperia 5 II either. Not only will it not necessarily be a second-generation Xperia 5, but there’s also no information at all about the branding. So it isn’t out of the question that Sony might be planning a new model entirely.
There also haven’t been many rumors regarding Sony’s work on a second flagship to be launched in the second half of 2020. The company has traditionally done so but its mobile business hasn’t been a stellar performer in the market. So there’s no guarantee that will happen. It may instead choose to launch a 5G smartphone in the less crowded mid-range or budget segment, with next-gen networking helping it to stand out in that market.
More details will undoubtedly be revealed as the first half of the year is brought to a close.
