Huawei launched the Mate Xs foldable smartphone in February this year. It is a minor upgrade to last year’s Huawei Mate X. According to the latest information, Huawei will be launching the Mate X2 smartphone later this year with a 120Hz display.
The device was mentioned in the list of smartphones launching in 2020 with a 120Hz display. It was tweeted by Ross Young, the founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants.
Mate X2 will launch in 2020 with a 120Hz display
Interestingly, there is no mention of the upcoming Mate 40 smartphones. Huawei introduced high refresh rate displays with the Mate 30 series. Until now, the high refresh rate on Huawei smartphones has been limited to 90Hz. Looks like the Mate 40 series might also settle for a 90Hz display.
For 2020, the Mate X2 could be the only Huawei smartphone with a 120Hz display. Huawei is expected to launch the Mate 40 series in October this year. The company might also unveil the Mate X2 foldable smartphone at the same event.
The Mate X and Mate Xs smartphones feature a large 8-inch OLED display that transforms into 6.6-inch main and 6.38-inch secondary displays when folded. As per the rumors, the Galaxy Fold 2 launching in September will also feature a 120Hz foldable screen.
It is the only other foldable smartphone mentioned on the same list. Both the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 and Huawei Mate X2 will be supporting 5G as well.
Huawei might also use ultra-thin glass for better durability
With foldable smartphones, the brands can accommodate larger batteries, which in return provides longer battery life than traditional smartphones. However, the popularity of foldable smartphones will mostly depend on the durability of the display.
Furthermore, Huawei’s outward folding design makes the display a bit more fragile during daily use. Even the Mate X2 could come with the same design as its earlier launched foldable smartphones. The leaks also suggest the upcoming foldable smartphone from the company might use ultra-thin glass (UTG).
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the first smartphone to launch with this new UTG technology. Like the Huawei Mate Xs, the upcoming Mate X2 might also come powered by the Kirin 990 5G built on the 7nm+ EUV process.
While the device will be running on the latest Android version, it will continue to miss out on Google Mobile Services (GMS) support. According to the patent filed with EUIPO, the Mate X2 is also expected to come with stylus support. Currently, only the MediaPad tablets from Huawei come with a stylus.
