Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 series in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East will be powered by the in-house Exynos 990. That’s based on recent reports stemming from tweets by two prominent tipsters, Ice universe and Max Weinbach.
The news is going to be disappointing for some, due to stigmas surrounding the Exynos line.
According to the tipsters, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series will be powered by the same processor found in the Samsung Galaxy S20 series.
In the Galaxy S20 series, the chips have proven to be slightly underpowered in some areas compared to the Snapdragon 865. So it had been reported that Samsung would release the 6nm Exynos 992 in time to be used. The goal, of course, would be to reduce the discrepancy between the Galaxy Note 20 series in Europe or other Exynos-only regions and other global regions.
Why is Samsung using the Exynos 990 for the Galaxy Note 20 series a problem?
As of right now, Samsung using the Exynos 992 doesn’t seem plausible. Mr. Weinbach notes that there’s no reference to any new chips in firmware he has examined. That’s with one exception. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865+ has been reported in the firmware. And that’s going to exacerbate the disappointment in this upcoming device if true.
Samsung users are already arguably paying more for a lesser chipset. There won’t necessarily be any discrepancy in the amount of RAM that chipset has access to this time around. There was with the Samsung Galaxy S20, which sold in Europe with less RAM as well as an Exynos chipset.
But the Snapdragon 865+ is undoubtedly a better chipset than that used in the US, China, and South Korean variants of the Galaxy S20. So the gap between the two versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series will grow beyond the gap between that earlier release. Compared to the Snapdragon 865, the „Plus” variant delivers improvements in both performance and battery life.
When is the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series coming?
It isn’t immediately clear whether the Snapdragon 865+ chipset will be used in every variant of the Galaxy Note 20. It may be the case that only the larger, more expensive variant will ship with that. But the mysteries surrounding the upcoming flagships should be solved soon enough, at any rate. Samsung is expected to launch its new devices, alongside the Galaxy Fold 2 and possibly the Galaxy Z Flip 2, on August 5.
