Dropbox is introducing new features across both its Professional and Plus level plans. For clarity, the Dropbox Plus plan is the companies second-tier offering. That’s typically priced at either $11.99 monthly or $119.88 for the entire year and includes up to 3TB storage. The Dropbox Professional plan typically costs $19.99 per month or $199 for the entire year and starts at 3TB storage.
Both plans already offer a wealth of benefits from a higher storage option to account- and file-recovery options. Now, Dropbox is looking to offer new backup, vault, and password storage features. And, at the higher tiers, those features in addition to better link sharing and access-tracking.
Each of the new features is now available across the plans now at no extra cost. Presumably, at least some of the new features will find their way over to users on Chromebooks as well. Especially now that the app integrates with the Chrome OS file system.
Dropbox Plus brings new backup, passwords, and vault
The first of the new features found in both the Plus and Professional Dropbox plans is Passwords. Summarily, the feature saves account details across all devices just like any standard password manager. And it works across Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. That means that users can automatically sync up their passwords and autofill them into all of the sites they visit.
Better still, Passwords-saved passwords are protected with zero-knowledge encryption. So they’re secure.
In that same vein, Dropbox is also launching Vault. As implied by its name, that is effectively a secured folder for personal files, ranging from pay stubs to tax documents or anything else that shouldn’t be seen by just anybody.
In addition to the security already in-place on Dropbox, Vault requires a separate PIN login. And users can also designate trusted friends and family with access. If emergency crops up and files in Vault are needed, those trusted users can still access the files.
Last but not least, Dropbox has improved its backup feature. Still available on PC or Mac and in all plans, including Dropbox Basic, that also does exactly what it’ss branding implies. The tool backs up designated files and folders continuously, whenever there is a connection and when changes are made.
With Plus and Professional plans, users get a lot more space though. So they can effectively back up all of their files with up to 3TB of cloud storage. When Dropbox is installed on a new machine, those files sync over directly in the Dropbox file.
Dropbox delivers professional-level insights with dedicated workspace features
For Dropbox Professional users, the company started by improving link sharing in favor of brand-recognition. But that’s not for Dropbox’s brand, it’s for the customers. Now, with branded sharing, users can present their own logo, company name, and background image on files. That way, whoever receives the files or folders will know exactly where those came from.
The same will appear in any files that have been emailed directly to other users.
For end-users who are receiving the files, that will go a long way toward making the organization process easier too. Especially since users will be able to see at a glance which files came from which company or source.
Finally, thanks to new traffic and insights features for Professional plan holders, Dropbox users can also see what happens with links they shared. That includes insights into who visited a shared link, the type of device that was used, and when it was accessed. So it’ll be possible to see whether it was accessed on the web or on a mobile device via the Dropbox app, for instance.
Just as pertinently, Dropbox will also show how the files were interacted with. Such as whether or not it was just viewed or also downloaded.
