A new Braille update is now live for Google Docs, which brings improved braille navigation and verbalization support for the visually impaired.
Notably, there are tons of new changes that have been included in this new update. This aims at providing better usability for the visually challenged users.
Several updates and features have been added in the past to GSuite. And now this new addition for visually impaired users is a nice touch for those who use Google Docs.
Moreover, a new shortcut Ctrl+Alt+H on Windows and CMD+Option+H on Mac is added via the Google Docs Braille feature. Basically, these shortcuts will help enable toggle Braille support in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
Additionally, the new Google Docs Braille update also adds new navigational shortcuts. This will allow the visually impaired users to here the cursor where it is hovering on the screen.
Users will also be able to hear the comments and suggestions in Google Docs using the new navigational features. The company has also improved user accessibility and experience.
Besides, navigating through lengthy documents and lists is also now more smooth and easier. The visually impaired users can now rely on Google Docs, as the features are now more reliable.
Images, misspelling and grammatical errors are verbalized directly by assistive technology
Google has also changed its software that verbalizes all the images, spelling, and grammatical errors by assistive technology. What would be more interesting for you to know is that this feature has been there on GSuite since 2018.
Sheets was added to GSuite back in 2018 alongside a screen magnifier for both Google Slides and Drawings. All these new features will be rolled over to the GSuite in the coming weeks.
The Gsuite supports known screen reading tools like ChromeVox which is a pre-installed app on Chromebooks. While on Windows it supports NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) and JAWS (Job Access with Speech), and Apple’s own VoiceOver software on Mac.
Moreover, all these new features will be enabled by default and for all the Gmail accounts. Users will not have to go and do any labor to activate these settings.
The Google Docs Braille update is rolling out since August 31, 2020. However, the full rollout for all the users will be coming on September 17. Note that users will have to update the assistive technologies and browsers to fully experience the new features on Google Docs.
According to the official blog, there is no admin control for this feature. If you want to know more about all the changes in detail, then you can head over here to check out the official GSuite blog.
