T-Mobile has lighted up its mid-band 5G spectrum in over 80 cities and towns. Consequently, millions of T-Mobile cellular users can now access 5G services at gigabit per second (1 Gbps) peak 5G speeds in these cities and towns.
The Un-carrier is planning to roll-out high-speed mid-band 5G in thousands of towns by the end of this year. T-Mobile has clarified that the company will bring this high-speed 5G to rural and suburban communities as well.
Last year, T-Mobile had launched its nation-wide 5G network. At launch, T-Mobile covers an estimated 250 million customers across 1.3 million square miles. As such, T-Mobile’s 5G network is bigger than the combined networks of its major competitors, AT&T and Verizon.
T-Mobile is now building on this coverage with the addition of the mid-band 5G spectrum to increase speeds. Unsurprisingly, T-Mobile boasts of holding more quantities of mid-band 5G spectrum than its competition.
In fact, Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile clarified that T-Mobile holds nearly twice as much low and mid-band spectrum as AT&T. Compared to Verizon, T-Mobile boasts of three times more low and mid-band 5G spectrum holdings.
What is the Mid-band 5G spectrum?
Carriers consider the mid-band 5G spectrum to be the best spectrum to offer 5G services with higher speeds and better coverage.
Mid-band 5G spectrum relies on microwaves of 2.5 GHz to 3.7 GHz frequency. Mobile service carriers prefer this spectrum as it allows higher speeds and deeper penetration.
Mid-band 5G spectrum currently allows up to gigabit-per-second (1 Gbps) speeds. Also, the service area under this spectrum’s coverage ranges up to several miles in radius. This spectrum band also excels at indoor penetration, which translates to faster indoor 5G speeds.
As tested by T-Mobile, users are receiving around 300 Mbps speeds on this supercharged 5G spectrum. However, the peak speeds are reported to be around the 900 Mbps to 1 Gbps mark. These speeds are around 7.5 times higher than the average 4G/LTE speeds.
In contrast, mmWave 5G has poor indoor penetration and coverage.
T-Mobile Lights up Mid-Band 5G spectrum after Sprint Merger.
Sprint and T-Mobile had officially merged in April this year. Subsequently, T-Mobile sped up engineering projects to light up high-speed mid-band 5G in Philadelphia and New York City.
The Un-carrier then focused on launching mid-band 5G in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. The company boasts that its engineering teams are rolling out around 1000 sites per month on mid-band 5G.
It is no wonder that T-Mobile is boasting of bringing this high-speed mid-band 5G to thousands of cities and towns by the end of this year.
