Samsung has announced that its TV Plus service will be coming over to select Galaxy-branded phones from its televisions.
For clarity, Samsung TV Plus is an application typically found on the companies smart TVs. It provides users free, instant access to news, sports, movies, television shows, and more. And it does so without any download or credit card requirements. Summarily, it’s a free entertainment-streaming service from Samsung.
With the service in place, Samsung Galaxy smartphone owners will have access to their favorite shows and content from an ever-increasing 135-channels. Kitchen Nightmares, Baywatch, PeopleTV, PlayersTV, CBS News, ET Live, Cheddar, WeatherNation, fubo Sports Network, Outside TV+, Tastemade, QVC, This Old House, FailArmy, The Pet Collective, and IGN are some of the noteworthy examples.
Samsung Galaxy owners will still effectively have to buy in to TV Plus
Now, as noted above, this is a free app. And Samsung is even adding it to the Google Play Store alongside its own app marketplace for Galaxy devices. But that doesn’t mean Samsung TV Plus is going to be on all phones for free. Or even all Samsung Galaxy phones.
Only the most expensive of Samsung’s devices will be able to access the app. At least to start.
That includes heavy hitters like the recently released Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy S20 series. And those phones are, it goes without saying, among the company’s most expensive. Samsung also is tacking in support for fans of its older flagship handsets but, surprisingly, there’s no mention of the Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip series.
The older Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 series devices will have access. But not Samsung’s priciest flagships.
That decision isn’t necessarily the most intuitive either. Especially since not only are those Samsung’s most expensive flagships. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 seems like a perfect fit as a smartphone that morphs into a tablet.
At least this arrives soon and won’t cost anything
Setting aside the excluded smartphone families, Samsung TV Plus won’t keep users of those other devices waiting much longer either. The company hasn’t indicated which regions the service will land in. Presumably, that’s everywhere Samsung TVs are sold with the app in place, at the very least. But the company does say it will arrive as soon as tomorrow — on September 23.
So fans of the service or those who want to check it out for the first time will want to keep an eye out for its arrival on the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store app.
