Google launched its Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 handsets yesterday and has now shared some camera samples. The samples, as reported by 9to5Google and included below, are compressed for uploading. So they don’t showcase the full extent of the devices’ capabilities. But they act as a decent showcase for the camera hardware itself nonetheless.
In particular, Google is highlighting the new phones’ “HDR+ with bracketing” feature. That utilizes multiple frames taken at higher and lower exposures, combined to provide a more accurately-lit image. Or, put another way, to provide a closer approximation to what the human eye sees.
The feature is intended for use when there are different lighting levels between the foreground and the background. Such as when the background is well-lit or has heavy backlighting while the foreground isn’t or doesn’t.
Additionally, the search giant is showcasing how its new Night Sight in Portrait mode works. In effect, allowing blurred backgrounds even in dark scenes. Night Sight itself should remain mostly unchanged here. So, of course, the phones should still capture great nighttime shots of the sky and other scenes too.
There’s no telephoto lens this time around but zoom works great
Now, both the Google Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 pack the same cameras and processors, so the samples here are representative of both devices. Specifically, they both feature an 8-megapixel f/2.0 aperture forward-facing selfie camera. And they both pack a dual rear camera array. That’s centered on a 12.2-megapixel f/1.7 aperture wide-angle lens and a 16-megapixel ultrawide lens. Notably, there’s no telephoto zoom lens this time around.
That’s not to say the cameras can’t take exceptional zoomed shots thanks to the Super Res Zoom features found on Pixel phones. In fact, the detail in images Google has shared highlighting zoomed captures, alongside wide-angle captures, is stunning. Even compressed, clarity is high even in objects so distant that most phones would simply fuzz them out.
The lens in question shoots at a reasonable 107-degrees field of view.
Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 will arrive with these cameras in tow sooner than later
Given how great the cameras on these Pixel devices are and the fact that they are both 5G-ready, it would be reasonable to expect them to be expensive. But that’s not the case at all. In fact, Google Pixel 5 is set to start at $699. The Google Pixel 4a 5G will hit the ground running at $499, conversely. And each will be available sooner than later too.
The official launch date for both handsets is October 15. Both are already open, however. And they’ll be sold at AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Amazon, the Google Store, Google Fi, and other retailers.
