Android native screenshot capabilities have not seen many changes since its early days. But the latest reports suggest that Google might be working on scrolling screenshot feature for Chrome on Android.
Well, the function of the native screenshot feature on Android has been fairly simple. And that is to take screenshots. You just have to press the power and volume button at the same time.
Besides, you can take a screenshot of any app on any page. Note that the native screenshot will not work on some apps like banking apps that restrict screenshots.
However, there is a limitation of this Android native screenshot. Users are not able to take scrolling screenshots or full-page screenshots. Though many of the OEMs provide this feature as a part of their custom UI.
Google has always been away from bringing new features and functionalities with the native screenshot app. There were some reports that highlighted that Google is testing out scrolling screenshot or full-page screenshot with Android 11.
But that did not materialize, and the feature did not reach the stable Android 11 builds. Fortunately now, it seems like Google is finally working on scrolling screenshots for Google Chrome on Android.
Scrolling screenshot was spotted as a new experimental flag for Google Chrome for Android
According to a report by Chrome Story, this scrolling screenshot or long screenshot feature was spotted as an experimental flag for Google Chrome for Android.
This feature would enable the long screenshot or commonly called scrolling screenshots within the browser. Here is the experimental flag that Google is working on:
Chrome Share Long Screenshots: Enables UI to edit and share long screenshots on Android
Till now, you had to download a third-party app in order to take a long screenshot for a full web page. Note that this is not a live feature that you can go ahead and test out.
Though it describes what this flag would do once it comes to Google Chrome for Android. Apparently, you would be able to take long or scrolling screenshots, edit and share them.
Besides, this feature is being tested in Google Chrome for Android. So, essentially, this feature would be a part of the Chrome browser instead of the Android OS as a whole.
Users will be able to take a long screenshot of the entire webpage, once this feature goes live for Google Chrome. OEMs have already implemented this feature in their custom UIs with different names.
But the idea remains the same. So, it might not be a new feature altogether for many. Android engineers have said that they are working on implementing the feature natively across the platform.
