The latest report by XDA highlights that Google is testing out a new voice search button in the top toolbar of the Google Chrome web browser on smartphones.
It’s been a while since Google changed the old voice search UI in the address bar of Google Chrome. A new flag called „Omnibox Assistant Voice Search” highlighted that would enable Google Assistant for Omnibox voice queries.
And now, the latest report suggests that a related UI change will bring a voice search button in the top toolbar of Google Chrome for smartphones.
Notably, a code was just merged to the Chromium Gerrit, apparently showing a new flag. The new flag is called „voice-button-in-top-toolbar” which carries a description, that it „enables showing the voice search button in the top toolbar.”
Meaning that when this flag is enabled, a voice search button will show up in the top toolbar of Google Chrome. Note that users would need to disable the share button in the top toolbar. This would be done in order to show this voice search button.
Besides, if the flag is disabled, the feature would revert back to its old interface. However, it’s still experimental and there’s no confirmation about the arrival time in the stable version of the app.
Google Chrome voice search button could be enabled by default for users running a stable release
While the flag is still under testing, it could be enabled by default for the stable release users. Additionally, if both the search button and voice search button are enabled, then users will only see the share button in the top toolbar.
As already mentioned the share button flag will be replaced by the voice button flag, once the latter is enabled. Google runs these kinds of tests every now and then.
But not all of them make their way to the stable version of the app. So, this may be something that the developers are testing for the time being and may scrap it later.
Only after it gathers sufficient engagement and is fruitful for the users, it will be added via an update to the Chrome browser. Google Chrome has gained quite a number of features over the years.
Recently the company was spotted testing the scrolling screenshot feature for Google Chrome on Android. This feature would allow the users to take long screenshots of the entire webpage natively with the Google Chrome browser.
This feature was also spotted as an experimental flag. And it negates the need of relying on third-party screenshot apps to take long or scrolling screenshots. However, it is yet to be seen to arrive for Google Chrome on Android.
