The recently released Pixel Drop Feature for the Google Pixel phones packed a bunch of features. Among the bunch is the Google Photos HDR filter for Pixel devices.
In the recent past, Google Photos has received quite a few tweaks. It got a new subscription for photo prints, an adjustment to the unlimited storage policy, a live wallpaper option for memories, etc.
Now, with the latest December update and Pixel Drop Feature, a new Google Photos HDR filter has been added to the app. This will enable users to increase brightness and contrast.
Notably, the HDR button appears in between the contrast and white point adjustment buttons. Once you have tapped on this HDR filter, the effect can be controlled in increments between 0 and 100.
Apparently, back in September, the Google Photos editor was completely revamped. And the new HDR filter is right there among the new controls for filters.
If you wish to reset the HDR intensity, then you can tap on the HDR button to go back to zero. The new Google Photos HDR filter works on any image, for instance, screenshots of something that you have downloaded online.
The new Google Photos HDR filter appears to be a Pixel exclusive at the moment
Talking about the Google Photos HDR filter, it seems to be a filter that applies on top of the image. And is not something that actually adjusts the HDR levels of the image.
Applying this new filter boosts the brightness a bit while preserving the darker sections of the images. We are not sure what improvements it does to the image apart from the brightness boost.
Moreover, this new HDR filter seems to be a Pixel exclusive feature at the moment. So, it does not show up on any other devices or even the web client.
One should not be surprised, as it has become sort of a trend where Pixel devices receive the new Google Photos feature first. This new feature is all thanks to the December security patch and Pixel Feature Drop.
It is a server-side rollout that requires you to have the latest version of the Google Photos app installed on your Pixel phone. FYI, the Pixel Drop Feature also received the traditional button combination to take a screenshot.
Users can now simply long-press power and volume down to take a screenshot on their Pixel devices. Of course, you need to install the latest update for that. This is pretty convenient, and many other OEMs still make use of this button combo for grabbing screenshots.
