Chromebooks To Get Key Gboard Clipboard Feature, Multipaste

Chromebooks may soon get a key part of the clipboard in Google’s Android Keyboard, dubbed „Multipaste” by the company. Spotted in recent commits by XDA Developers, the feature appears slated for the near future, in fact. As early as Chrome M89.
Now, this isn’t going to work exactly like Gboard’s clipboard manager. But it will help users by storing the five most recently copied or cut content. According to the source, that’s not just text either. The clipboard will store text, formatted text, images, links, and „web smart paste.”
It isn’t immediately clear what web smart paste actually is. That could potentially work similarly to links that users can save to jump to a specific line of text or stopping point on a webpage. As opposed to linking to the page alone, the link could potentially send users to a specific text fragment. But that’s still very much up in the air.
Meanwhile, links themselves will be saved in a similarly mysterious „bookmark format.”
What sets Multipaste apart for Chromebooks is right there in the internal branding
None of that means Multipaste will work just like saving to the clipboard works in Gboard for Chromebooks. Although there will potentially be a way to access each individual link via a shortcut icon on the desktop. That would most likely appear in the system tray or in the Quick Settings — behind a tap or click on the clock.
Instead, Multipaste does exactly what its branding implies for Chrome OS, pasting the most recent five items from the clipboard. That, in effect, allows users to paste multiple items at once.
Based on commits and recent reports, that would be tucked behind a keyboard shortcut. So users would simply need to hold the „Search” key and press „V,” instead of holding down „Ctrl” or „Ctrl+Shift.” The latter keypresses are typically used with „V” for pasting or pasting in plain text format.
This won’t necessarily arrive with Chrome OS 89
Now, also as noted above, this is slated for release in version M89. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will arrive for everybody with Chrome OS version 89. The „M” denotes that this is a milestone update. So even the best Chromebooks on the market might have to wait a while. The milestone changes typically arrive between the launch of the OS version update and the next version.
That puts this feature, if all goes smoothly, between March 9 and April 20.
