Google Set To Launch COVID-19 Contact Tracing Tech In Smartwatches

Google looks set to release it Covid-19 contact tracing technology into wearable tech in the near future. As reported by Android Central the company will make this technology accessible on smartwatches as well as other wearable tech.
Company’s all around the world have had to scramble in various ways in order to tackle the challenge of the pandemic. Tech companies have been at the forefront of providing innovative solutions to some of the major issues posed.
For example, an AI model has found it that it is possible to detect Coronavirus from the sound of coughs. Other companies have used various other methods in order to track symptoms and other factors surrounding the virus.
Google themselves have also been working on ways to tackle misinformation about the virus. The company has committed to providing up to date information about the virus and downgrade inaccurate search results.
On top of this Google has been hard at work to develop contact tracing technology for Covid-19. This work has been done in conjunction with the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) and could help tackle rising infection rates across the globe
Google set to launch wearable contact tracing technology
This news has emerged thanks to the discovery of new strings found in Google Play Services v20.50.14. These show that Google could soon bring us Wearable Exposure Notification support to the app.
It appears that as soon as you have paired a compatible device with your phone you will receive a dialogue message. This will read „Your phone will use this device to securely collect and share random IDs with other devices that are nearby. You can be notified if you’ve been near someone who reported having COVID-19. The date, duration, and signal strength associated with an exposure will be shared with the app.”
This is unfortunately all the details we have to hand at the moment. We know little more about exactly how the system will work but it is likely to be very similar to other contact tracing apps we have seen around the world.
It looks like tech giant will share more information about the service in due course. This will likely occur in conjunction with finalization with the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).
However, on the whole, this looks to be another positive move the fight against Covid-19. How effective this will still remain under question. However, any extra tools available to fight the virus are very welcome.
