Snapdragon 870 Is Coming In A Slew Of Flagship Killers This Year

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870 was only just announced yesterday but it will reportedly ship in a number of new flagship killers in 2021. That includes phones from companies ranging from Motorola and OnePlus to iQOO, OPPO, and Xiaomi. Or at least it does if recent reports compiling existing rumors are to be believed.
What’s so special about Snapdragon 870?
For clarity, the Snapdragon 870 is, at its core, not a flagship processor. That distinction is left for the Snapdragon 888. And it’s no slouch either. As announced, it sits squarely between the Snapdragon 888 and last year’s Snapdragon 865 chipsets. But with one important distinction. The Snapdragon 870 will have the highest clock rate of any Snapdragon processor.
Summarily, the Snapdragon 870 is a 7nm chip, compared to the Snapdragon 888’s 5nm process. It’s also geared for performance, with a prime Kryo 585 core clocked at 3.2GHz. That’s compared to the Snapdragon 888’s Cortex-X1 core at 2.84GHz. And that’s what sets this chip apart. Otherwise, it’s almost identical to last year’s flagship chipset.
But that also makes Snapdragon 870 the perfect chipset for flagship killers. With that term being coined to describe phones with flagship-like performance and/or features but priced at a much lower cost.
So what are the flagship killers that are expected to ship with Snapdragon 870?
Now, not every brand rumored to arrive with the Snapdragon 870 chip has been detailed as an exact phone model just yet. The expectation, for example, is that OPPO and IQOO are working on devices with the chip. But it isn’t clear yet which phones those will be. Motorola’s Moto Edge S is among the products listed, conversely. That phone has also already been detailed to a large extent and is expected to be revealed sooner than later.
The other two companies expected to launch a Snapdragon 870-powered handset in the near future are Xiaomi and OnePlus. For the latter company, the chip is rumored to appear in the OnePlus 9 series. However, it won’t likely appear in the OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro. There are also expected to be models designated the OnePlus 9E and OnePlus Lite. And it’s the latter devices that will likely pack a Snapdragon 870 chip.
The hardware in OnePlus 9 Lite and OnePlus 9E are expected to be nearly identical to the OnePlus 8T but with the new chipset powering the package instead of the Snapdragon 865.
From Xiaomi, rumors have begun surfacing on China’s Weibo social network suggesting that its upcoming Redmi K40 will come in two variants. Namely, one with the Snapdragon 888 and another with the Snapdragon 870. That phone is expected to land with an AMOLED display, a 4,520mAh battery, and a triple camera too. The camera will, allegedly, be led by a 48-megapixel primary snapper. And that will be coupled with an ultra-wide and macro lens.
