LG is no stranger to rollable screens but could be looking to build a smartphone that has dual-screen technology too. That’s based on a recent report from MySmartPrice News, detailing a recently awarded patent for the company.
The patent images and description are fairly straightforward. But the second display in this dual-screen affair may not appear where many would expect. That’s because it’s placed on the rear of the device next to the primary, now LG-standard, droplet style camera array.
The second screen doesn’t fill that entire space either. Instead, LG appears to be looking at placing the panel to the left of the cameras and to the right of the left-hand edge. It’s centered vertically as well, so it would essentially fill only a portion of the center of the rear panel. There’s likely a good reason for that placement too. It would allow cases to be built that would protect both display panels with a raised lip.
The secondary screen might be most useful for those who want to take selfies since the patent doesn’t show a front camera.
Isn’t this dual-screen LG a rollable smartphone too?
The other big display item in this patent is the rollable aspect. That’s because this LG dual-screen smartphone is a rollable phone too. But, it doesn’t necessarily work the way that might be expected. When rolled up, the LG dual-screen phone is a fairly standard shape for smartphones. It just has a screen both front and back with a curved panel at the front.
Unrolled, it resembles a foldable smartphone, with a front screen that’s 40-percent bigger. But, instead of unfolding, the rear panel remains in place. The front panel is expanded by a hidden portion of the display rolling out as its extended.
The design is not wholly different from many previous LG patents in that regard. In fact, it most closely resembles the rollable smartphone that appears to have been hinted LG’s CES 2021 presentation.
Will this ever be real?
Now, it’s impossible to say with any certainty whether this particular patent will ever be used. But, given its proximity and likeness to the above-mentioned LG teaser at CES, it doesn’t seem unlikely. Or at least not unlikely that something similar to this is in the works for the South Korean tech giant. With that said, any such phone is also unlikely to appear until the next major mobile event — namely, MWC 2021 in late June.
