In a recent development, according to multiple Reddit users and The Verge, Spotify offline playback support is now officially rolling out for Wear OS users.
The company has confirmed to The Verge that the update is now live for Wear OS users. Notably, this also includes the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, as they also run on Wear OS.
Spotify was working on this offline playback feature for quite some time now. It has taken them too long to serve this feature on the Wear OS smartwatches.
A Reddit user, having TicWatch Pro, has confirmed that the reception of this new update. As per the screenshots shared by the user, it shows a new icon showing the playback is currently on the watch.
The comment section of this user’s Reddit post is filled with user comments confirming the update is indeed rolling out in full swing.
However, there are a few pre-requisites, that need to be fulfilled before you can use Spotify offline on a Wear OS device. The offline Spotify playback is available only for Wear OS 2.0 or newer.
Spotify offline playback feature is only live for Premium subscribers
Moreover, in order to enjoy the offline playback feature from your wrist, you need to have a Spotify Premium membership. Only Premium members can download albums and playlists for offline listening.
Users can play their music only in Shuffle mode using a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. So, if you are a Spotify Premium user, then you can head to your favorite track, hit the Download to watch button.
Once the download is complete, it will be available for offline playback. A little green arrow will be shown next to the content’s name to highlight that it is available for offline streaming.
The good thing, though, is that free users can listen to offline downloaded podcasts from the Wear OS devices. Spotify announced this feature back on August 11 for Wear OS smartwatches.
It was touted that the feature will start rolling out in the coming weeks. Cut to now, it is already live for many Wear OS smartwatch users.
For those who use Apple Watch, the offline playback for Spotify feature was added recently. Deezer was ahead of Spotify to launch the feature a couple of days before to Apple Watch.
If you haven’t received the Spotify offline playback feature on your Wear OS 2.0 smartwatch, then you should probably wait. As the rollout is expected to pick up pace in the coming days.
