According to a new piece of information that just surfaced, four Chinese smartphone OEMs aim to provide competition for Google’s Play Store. Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO play to compete with the Play Store.
This information comes from Reuters. Those four companies are allegedly joining forces to create a platform for developers outside China to upload apps onto all of their app stores simultaneously.
Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO & Vivo will try to challenge the dominance of the Play Store
This, according to analysts, basically means that those OEMs are trying to challenge the dominance of the Play Store.
So, just to be clear, those four companies are not exactly creating a single store that would compete with the Play Store. Developers would be given a way to tweak it one way, and for it to work on app stores from all those companies.
Needless to say, more companies could join this movement in the future, of course. Chinese OEMs are amongst the biggest players in the Android world, so this could really mean something for the platform.
This movement was almost certainly born following the US ban of Huawei. As most of you know, Huawei is not allowed to pre-install Google services on its phones, and thus doesn’t have access to the Play Store, and other Google apps.
That has managed to create quite a problem for the company, and it’s no wonder it wants to be more independent. This move would probably make sure that happens.
Global Developer Service Alliance (GDSA) is the alleged name they’ll use
This alliance is called Global Developer Service Alliance (GDSA). The aim of the platform is to make it easier for developers to market their applications overseas.
The source claims that this platform will launch in March, at least that was the plan. It is unknown whether the coronavirus outbreak will affect that timeline.
Reuters notes that all four companies in question denied to comment, and the same goes for Google.
It is worth noting that those four companies account for 40.1-percent of global smartphone shipments. At least that was the case in Q4 2019. Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO still have full access to Google services (including the Play Store), but they are probably afraid that will change following what happened to Huawei.
These four companies certainly have enough appeal to get developers to notice them. That alone makes this piece of information quite interesting. We’ll see if the announcement will arrive in March, or later on.
