Since the launch of Stadia Google has give members the ability to adjust their data usage when playing on Android, but it might not be immediately noticeable how to change this if you haven’t really poked around.
The good news is it’s not hard to find and there are good reasons why you might want to adjust it. Stadia is of course a heavy data usage service. Streaming your games for even just an hour can eat through quite a bit of data.
It’s also worth noting that the data usage options are for anywhere you play games on Stadia, and not just on the phone. It’s just that you can only access this particular option from the Android app for now. However that will change at some point in the future.
If you’re curious how to change this option, this quick guide will show you where to access it and adjust it as you see fit.
Find the data usage options inside the Stadia app

The first thing you’ll need to do is open up the Stadia app on your supported Android device and head to the settings menu.
If you’re not sure where to find this, the menu is hiding in the player profile avatar. Simply tap on that and you’ll find all of the settings for Stadia in this menu.
Next, scroll and find the Data Usage & Performance option and tap on this sub-menu. Inside here you will find three different options.
The first (and also default) option is for best visual quality and is going to allow for performance and resolution up to 4K. This uses the most data at up to 20GB an hour. Which is obviously quite a lot.
Next you have the balanced option for resolution up to 1080p, which uses up to 12.6GB an hour. Finally there’s the limited option to bring the resolution down to 720p which uses up to 4.5GB of data an hour.
Choose the option that best fits your own personal needs and then the next time you launch a game the changes will take effect.
This data option will be available on the Stadia website in the future

As of right now you can’t actually adjust these settings through the Stadia website. If you go to the Stadia settings on Stadia.com the data usage and performance menu is there, but you can’t actually change anything.
If you click on it, it simply says that you can manage the options through the website soon, and to use the app instead.
As mentioned above though any option you choose through the Stadia app will take effect wherever you play games through Stadia. So keep that in mind when you’re going to select one of the options.
You can also adjust these at any point in time so you aren’t stuck with one particular option forever.
Why you may want to adjust this option from time to time
There are a couple of major reasons. If you play games on Stadia via your Android smartphone then you aren’t going to be able to get 4K resolution.
This is only supported through the Chromecast Ultra, which means having it set to the 4K option doesn’t do you any good unless your using that device to play games.
In this particular case, you’re better off using the balanced option so you’re not eating up as much data. Stadia will automatically adjust based on your internet connection.
So if you have fast and strong enough internet to support 4K, it’ll likely eat through that much data if you have that option selected. Because it goes off of not only your internet connection, but the plan you’ve chosen.
Another reason to adjust this down even if your internet is fast enough to support 4K is if you don’t have a 4K TV or monitor. This is an obvious statement, but some may not even think about it.
If you don’t have a TV or monitor to support the 4K resolution, then you’ll only be seeing games at 1080p anyways. So in this case the balanced option is once again the best fit.
And that’s all there is to it. You can go back into the app and change this again if you ever need to. And eventually you’ll be able to change the data usage options through other avenues.
