Google introduced a new Google TV UI with the new Chromecast during the recently concluded online event. Well, the standalone app of Google TV is available to download from the Play Store.
However, the app itself neither brings any new features, not it does anything for Android TV devices. But in the future, all Android TV devices will slowly adapt to the new Google TV.
There is a key difference between Android TV and Google TV. The latter heavily focuses on content recommendations from different streaming platforms.
With the help of this feature, users can focus on watching more content instead of relying on dedicated apps of these platforms to look for content.
For all those enthusiasts who wish to try out Google TV UI on their Android TV, can feel fortunate. Because in this post, we will share with you the steps that would help you to get the Google TV on your Android TV device.
So, let us take a look at the steps that you need to perform to get Google TV UI on your Android TV.
Google TV UI can be installed on Android TV devices running Android 9 or above
Like any process, there are some pre-requisites that you need to check before following the steps. Basically, your Android TV, set-top box, or dongle need to be running Android 9 Pie or above.
If you are unsure about the version of Android running on your Android TV device, you can head over to Settings > Device Preferences > About > Version.
Moreover, there are a couple of files that we will need for sideloading to your Android TV. The first one is the Google TV Home launcher itself. While the other one is the updated Google app.
Now, move the download APK files to your Android TV. To do that, simply use Bluetooth or use any WiFi-based transfer app.
Once you are successfully done with the transfer of both the files, open File Manager like File Commander, etc. on your Android TV device.
Install the APK files
Locate the APKs and install them one-by-one on your Android TV device. After installing the apps, you need to uninstall the original Android TV Launcher app from your TV.
And to do that, head over to Settings, tap Device Preferences, then click About. After that tap on Build repeatedly seven times until a message says „You Are Now A Developer!”.
Head back and enter the newly added Developer Options. Under developer options, toggle on the Network Debugging to send ADB commands to Android TV from phone or tablet.
On your Android smartphone or tablet, install the Remote ADB Shell on your device from the Play Store. Open the app and you will be asked to enter the IP address of your Android TV.
You will find the IP address of your Android TV by heading to Settings > Device Preferences > About > Status > IP Address. Notably, keep the port number as 5555.
Press the Connect button and a message will pop-up on your Android TV. Select OK to enable wireless connection. This will connect your smartphone to your TV.
Type pm uninstall –user 0 com.google.android.tvlauncher command and hit Enter. If the command works, you will see a „Success” message.
That’s it! Now, when you press the Home button, you will be taken to the new Google TV UI. Installing the Google Home app would also enable the Search tab as well.
